Why Ayurveda Works For Stress Reduction In HSPs

Ayurveda For Stress Reduction - HSP Health Blog

As a highly sensitive person, I experience a lot of stress.

Most highly sensitive people do.

It is not a choice. Our nervous systems are sponges for the stimulus around us.

We become flooded and overwhelmed. If we are not careful we can drown and become unable to function.

Stress Reduction: A Necessity For Highly Sensitive People

Stress reduction is as much a necessity for highly sensitive people as air is for everyone. We simply cannot live without it.

When the pace of the world was slower, highly sensitive people could manage the stresses of their nervous systems better. Now that there is so much activity in our social space, the challenge of stress reduction for highly sensitive people has become more difficult and even acute.

Highly sensitive people require:

  • the opportunity to process whatever they take in
  • rest when their nervous systems are overtaxed
  • a lifestyle that supports their stress reduction requirements
  • work that supports their health and quality of life.

How Stress Reduction Problems Become Worse

Highly sensitive people can suffer more when their lifestyles do not support their needs or make their health challenges worse.

The demands of being highly sensitive require that we commit a certain amount of our energy to it. When our energy is too low or diverted elsewhere, then we will suffer and most likely become sick.

The following can make it more difficult for us to handle our sensitive natures:

  1. water, air, and noise pollution
  2. processes food
  3. food with additives
  4. GMO foods
  5. leftover foods
  6. fried and fermented foods
  7. meat which is harder to digest than other foods
  8. staying up too late
  9. lack of exercise
  10. an irregular schedule which will upset the nervous system
  11. work that is too high pressure or too much drudgery
  12. relationships that are unsupportive, competitive or demanding

Much of the modern Western lifestyle is aggravating to highly sensitive people. It is not a fault of highly sensitive people but is is a reality we have to deal with.

Why Ayurveda Makes Stress Reduction Easier For Highly Sensitive People

There are so many challenges in modern life that make life hard for highly sensitive people.

I have tried many different methods to become healthier including juicing, vitamins, supplements of various kinds, meditation, Ayurveda, reiki, affirmations and the Sedona Method. I have read many books about health and well being.

I have discovered that most methods are a form of “managing the symptoms.” I did not just want to manage symptoms. I wanted to be healthy.

Being healthy is a different goal than not having symptoms of illness. I have learned that few approaches really get the job done.

Only one that I have found has really helped me to become well and that is Ayurveda.

Why Ayurveda Works For Stress Reduction In Highly Sensitive People

As a highly sensitive person, I need to simplify whenever I can.

Health can be complicated since we are complex beings – particularly if you are highly sensitive.

Ayurveda is the one discipline that actually lets me simplify my health regimen because

  • it is a group of health practices customized to support the highest well being of each individual
  • it is holistic and total.
  • it offers a set of daily practices that let me be at my best
  • its diet strategies ensure that the problems of food in our current world are not my problem
  • TM, the Ayurvedic meditation practice is easy. It relieves stress, heals the nervous system and supports the higher self. I have been doing it for almost 20 years and love it..
  • Ayurveda has a magnificent understanding of food and herbs. Their herbal remedies have helped me immensely.

There is a lot to learn in Ayurveda. Frankly I consider myself a student and always will.

Implementing Ayurveda

I have been integrating Ayurveda into my life slowly over time. I have noticed, however, that the more I do the less I am affected by stress.

I use the following Ayurvedic practices:

  • TM has been especially helpful since I find I am less affected by drama around me after practicing TM for so long. I have been told that it works on the nervous system and heals it, which I have found to be the case.
  • I find that the daily schedule has helped me reduce stress. I like to go to bed around 9PM and rise between 5-6AM.
  • I also like the daily massage, called Abhyangha. It is self massage using oil. It helps with detoxification and stress reduction.
  • the diet is very soothing. When you eat food that is wrong for you, it creates stress in the body. The digestive system becomes weaker and toxins build up in the body. The Ayurvedic diet and lifestyle work to prevent that outcome.
  • There are times when I have had difficulty maintaining the diet for schedule reasons. I have however, maintained a regimen of herbal remedies that support me and help me detox in spite of dietary lapses. The two herbs that I use religiously are triphala and neem.
  • Ayurveda offers herbs for stress. Ashwaghandha is the best known and I take it for stress relief.

I highly recommend Ayurveda for highly sensitive people for relieving stress and putting themselves onto a path that can work to achieve quality of life: something we deserve.

I believe that it is better to put your effort into becoming adept at a health system that eliminates problems that to continually try to fix that which does not work. Micromanaging health symptoms is not the same as becoming healthy.

The best book for learning about Ayurveda as a beginner is Deepak Chopra’s book, Perfect Health. It is a very accessible introduction to an old and skillful health tradition.

I love Ayurveda and hope you will give it a try.

Ayurveda For Any Type Of Depression

depression

depression
Any type of depression is tricky to heal since it can present itself in many ways. It can range from temporary mood swings to more persisting feelings of dejection or self-pity over an extended period of time. In its most extreme form, depression can even present itself as severe melancholia, leading the sufferer to contemplate suicide.

Most people think of depression as a state of mind, when in fact it is a clinical condition stemmed from a physical hormone imbalance. Once diagnosed, there are treatments for any type of depression that can help the sufferer feel better and which can lead to a drastic change in attitude, outlook on life and even appearance. Studies have shown that there are natural ways to treat depression such as through supplements and exercise that don’t have the long-lasting side effects of strong pharmaceuticals.

Ayurveda For Any Type Of Depression

One of the most promising source of treatments and supplements available is Ayurveda. Ayurveda is a traditional Indian medicine that has been used for thousands of years to treat various ailments caused by an imbalance in the bodies energies. Once the energies are stabilized, it is believed that mental and physical health can return.

Ayurveda is safe and natural. It can be used in conjunction with other medications. Ayurvedic doctors work with Western medicine but nonetheless it’s best to check with a doctor before beginning to take Ayurveda if you are currently taking any other medications.

How Ayurveda Works For Any Type Of Depression

Ayurveda works by addressing the two main causes of depression:

  • an imbalance in the three doshas or bioenergies of the human ecosystem: Vata, Pitta and Kapha
  • developing and promoting an awareness of the inner Self

Doshas are the bioenergetic forces that determine health, both mentally and physically. Dosha imbalances result in physical as well as behavioral imbalances and symptoms. It is believed that depression is largely caused by an imbalance in the body that may progress to more serious ailments if left untreated.

More Than One Type of Depression

Ayurveda is useful for treating any type of depression.

Ayurveda provides a full range of treatments and living solutions that enable you to take care of yourself so that you are in optimum health. They offer excellent stress reduction techniques, diet and lifestyle solutions as well as herbal remedies and detoxification. All of the Ayurvedic treatments are natural and meant to enhance and support the bioenergy of the individual.

The different types of depression show up in different ways:

  • Vata induced depression is characterized by an abundance of fear, anxiety, nervousness and sleeplessness. It can be aggravated by loneliness or the loss of a loved one.
  • Pitta induced depression involves fear of failure or fear of making mistakes. If untreated, this form can progress to suicidal tendencies. People who suffer from this form of depression are usually addicted to success or may be pressured by family achieve things. It often manifests itself in the winter.
  • Kapha induced depression is characterized by the feeling of being weighed down. It involves excessive sleepiness, obesity and feelings of having a wasted life.

The special blend of herbs and ingredients in Ayurveda address imbalances of each type of dosha while not affecting the healthy part of the body. Each type of depression experienced stems from whatever the dosha is lacking. Ayurvedic herbs are a great way to restore balance to the body.

What Are Some Ayurvedic Treatments For Depression?

Ayurveda is a combination of herbs that together work to restore balance to an individual’s body. For those suffering from depression suitable herbs will have a calming effect on the nervous system and brain. Some suitable herbal ingredients include Brahmi, Ashwagandha, Vachaa, Mandook parni and Guduchi that are available in a variety of herbal combinations.

In addition to supplements, there are also external Ayurvedic treatments. Some detoxification treatments that can be helpful are the pouring of liquid medication over the forehead between the eyebrows, and body massage. Ayurvedic medicine also stresses the practice of yoga for health and treatment of specific ailments.

The combination of supplements, yoga and awareness can help cure the depression, allowing the sufferer to lead a healthier, happier life. Unlike western medicines, Ayurveda is a safe and natural way to address imbalances in the body that may lead to a variety of health problems. Ayurveda is particularly valuable for highly sensitive people because if is tailored to the individual, is designed to support your natural and best self and doesn’t cause the side effects of allopathic medications.

For HSPs it is definitely worth asking your natural health practitioner about Ayurveda to find out if you can benefit from its natural approach to treating depression.

The Best Spring Home Detox Program

the colorado cleanse

I have taken the Colorado Cleanse and that is why I am discussing it now.

The Cleanse is the best detox program that I know of because it does the serious work of internal cleaning. It is very effective.

The Colorado Cleanse is not a superficial program. If you really would like to feel better and understand what you are doing and why this program will help you immensely.

I love how Dr. John Douillard, the program creator, explains  all aspects of it so that you become more empowered in your health care. Too often we are kept in the dark about how to become healthy. Dr. Douillard demystifies it – to his credit.

The program is offering a 15% discount to Early Birds starting on 2/28 for newsletter subscribers. The Cleanse can be done at any time; however, if you would like to try the group cleanse, it is offered this year from April 9-22.

Below are the details of the program. In the interest of full disclosure, I am an affiliate.

How The Colorado Cleanse Is Different

The Colorado Cleanse is a 2 week at-home detox and digestive reset program, designed to help detoxify fat soluble toxins that can store for years in the fat cells.* Unlike other fad cleanses, the Colorado Cleanse is rooted in sound medical science and the ancient cleansing wisdom of Ayurveda. This cleanse has been developed by Dr. Douillard through decades of clinical practice with thousands of successful cleansers, many of whom are now its biggest fans.

Where fad cleanses emphasize extreme fasting and dangerously unbalanced diets, the Colorado Cleanse relies on a gentle, simple diet that allows the body to burn fat without hunger pains.*

And where fad cleanses trigger blood sugar crashes, starvation-mode cravings and immediate binging afterwards, the Colorado Cleanse balances the blood sugar, allowing the body to enjoy the contented blissful energy of natural fat-metabolism, while you continue working and going about your daily life.*

The Colorado Cleanse is unique because it repairs the body’s detox and digestive channels before starting the detox.* Cleansing without this preparation can move toxins from one fat cell to another, which defeats the purpose of cleansing and often manifests as stubborn digestive weakness and symptoms of lymphatic congestion.*

The Colorado Cleanse is a 2 week at-home detox and digestive rejuvenation program.  You can do the Anytime Colorado Cleanse at your own convenience, or your can join us each Spring and Fall during the Group Colorado Cleanse.   The Colorado Cleanse can be done while working and leading your regular lifestyle.

Colorado Cleanse Success Stories

The Colorado Cleanse has helped thousands of people. Here are some of the many stories of people who have benefited from this wonderful detox program. I highly recommend that you read them.

What does the Cleanse involve?

During the 2-week Colorado Cleanse you will do a daily practice of yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises, 12 minutes of aerobic exercise, take Ayurvedic herbal formulas that support the detox process, and eat a special diet during the three phases*:

PRE-CLEANSE (Days 1-4)
To prepare your body to flush these toxins out of their storage sites, we will first make sure that your natural detox channels are functional by following an allergen-free whole foods diet, eating 4 specific foods each day, and taking the specified herbs.* This will help:

  • Balance Blood Sugar and Heal Intestinal Villi: Start by stabilizing your blood sugar and healing the intestinal mucosa of your intestinal tract.*
  • De-Stagnate the Lymphatic System: Improve the function of your lymphatic system, which drains the gut through the GALT (Gut Associated Lymphatic Tissue) where 80% of the body’s immune system is housed.*
  • Thin the Bile and Prepare to Detox: Once the detox channels of the lymph are moving, decongest the liver and thin the bile. Adequate bile flow is critical in optimizing and maintaining the detox channels of the body.*

MAIN CLEANSE (Days 5-11)
During the Main Cleanse, you will eat a simplified diet of nonfat khichari, which is a specific type of rice and beans prepared in a way that helps heal the digestion.* You will also drink increasing amounts of ghee each morning.

  • Reset Fat Metabolism, Flush the Liver and Detox Toxic Fat: Once the liver and bile are functioning better, cleanse the toxic chemicals that are stored in the fat cells.*
  • Self-Inquiry Exercises to help release old emotions, patterns, habits and behaviors that store in the fat cells.*

POST CLEANSE (Days 12-14)
After the Main Cleanse, you will return to the Pre Cleanse diet and add a Digestive Reset Protocol to boost your digestive fire.*

  • Reset Digestive Strength: After the cleanse, reset your upper digestive strength, which is the most common cause of digestive distress.*

AFTER THE CLEANSE
You will continue taking your herbal formulas for a few more weeks. In addition, we recommend that you follow a seasonal, whole foods diet, which you will naturally have the craving for now.

13 Herbs For Detoxing

Mixed Salad © by the Italian voice

My cat, Kelly, loves to eat my asparagus fern.

She is detoxing.

I learned from Dr. John Douillard of Lifespa in Colorado that new greens which emerge from the ground in the spring are meant to help us cleanse our intestinal tract after a winter of eating heavy insulating foods. There are specific steps in an effective detox:  Which Detoxing Steps Are You Missing?

In order to detox well, you need the right diet and practices that will support the cleansing of your system.  In addition, there are herbs that are especially effective for removing the toxins that make you sluggish and create disease.

These are 13 Ayurvedic herbs for an effective detox and rejuvenation program (1)(2):

  1. for cleaning the lymphatic system, where our immune system is located: manjistha. According to the Ayurvedic Encyclopedia, manjistha is one of the best herbs for blood purification and for detoxing the liver of environmental toxins which are increasingly a reason for poor health. It also cleans and regulates the liver, spleen, pancreas and kidneys, all organs which are important parts of the digestive system, and is anti-cancer and anti-tumor.
  2. for repairing the mucus membrane of the gut, which becomes dysfunctional when clogged by heavy foods: turmeric. Turmeric helps relieve the mucus buildup that comes from eating heavy foods, regulates the metabolism, is a natural antibiotic that improves intestinal flora and purifies the blood.  It improves IBS, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s Disease and all inflammatory conditions.
  3. thinning the bile so that toxins do not get backed up in the liver forcing them into the body where they will be stored in fat cells: beets, fenugreek, cinnamon.
    • Beets improve lymph, liver and gall bladder functioning and act as a laxative as well.
    • Fenugreek is a rejuvenating herb that improves liver function and diabetic symptoms.
    • Cinnamon is a strengthener: it strengthens the metabolism, one’s constitution and the individual organs of digestion: the liver, spleen pancreas and kidneys.
  4. cleansing the liver  for proper processing of fat soluble toxins: amalaki, guduchi, barberry.
    • Amalaki cleans the intestines, stops stomach and intestinal inflammation, and improves the symptoms of diabetes and gastrointestinal conditions.
    • Guduchi is a blood purifier that improves digestion. It supports the immune system.
    • Barberry is a kind of decongestant in that it reduces fat, reduces congestion in the stomach, regulates liver functioning and destroys toxins in the body.
  5. cell regeneration: shilajit. Shilajit restores oxygen and nutrition to depleted cells and strengthens the immune system.
  6. balancing blood sugar: gymnema sylvestre removes sugar from the pancreas and restores pancreatic function and making it one of the most important  Ayurvedic herbs for diabetes.
  7. restoring digestion: ginger, black pepper, long pepper. These three herbs all act on digestion to stimulate and restore the digestive fire.

These are all important and useful herbs for anyone seeking a strong digestive detox. I have personally used then and have been very pleased with the improvement to my well-being. They are worth considering as part of a detoxification plan.

Which Detoxification Steps Are You Missing?

secret summer herb garden © by woodleywonderworks

Are you aware that detoxification is only part of the process of rejuvenating yourself?

Detoxification is necessary when toxins build up in our bodies to a point where the pathways of the body become clogged so that nourishment and detoxification are not able to occur naturally.

Getting rid of toxins and restoring balance consists of 2 objectives:

  1. clean up the digestive and immune systems
  2. restoring cell and digestive functioning.

One of the best detoxification experts is Dr. John Douillard of Lifespa in Colorado. He is also the author of Colorado Cleanse which details in a very readable way why you need to detox and the steps necessary to remove toxins from the body and restore optimal functioning. Dr. Douillard’s excellent detoxification program that both detoxes and rejuvenates the body.

These are the steps for an effective detox and rejuvenation program:

  1. cleaning the lymphatic system, home to most of our immune system. The lymphatic system is found in the inside of our intestinal wall and extends to all the lymph channels of the body including the lymphatic systems the drain the skin and membranes of the body of toxins. When the lymphatic system is compromised, our immune systems cannot do their jobs.
  2. repairing the mucus membrane of the gut. Part of the lymph system is the mucus membrane of the gut which is very responsive to digestive imbalances. The imbalances show up either as constipation or diarrhea depending on whether the imbalances are drying or creating congestion. These imbalances then damage our immune functioning.
  3. thinning the bile.  When there is congestion in the mucus membranes of the intestine, toxins do not get processed by the intestines. Instead they back up to the liver which thickens the bile which in turn congests the bile and pancreatic ducts. The result is that fats cannot be digested, fat soluble toxins cannot be processed and digestive enzymes are not as available to do their job. This compromises both the immune system and digestion.
  4. cleansing the liver for proper processing of fat soluble toxins and digestion of fats so that they of not end up stored in fat cells throughout the body.
  5. cell regeneration. When you have a build up of toxicity in the body, nutrition and oxygen do not reach the cells causing them to starve. Cell regeneration helps restore nutrition and energy to the cells of the body.
  6. balancing blood sugar. With all the concerns about diabetes, most of us worry about blood sugar levels which when stabilized make it easier it use fat stores as fuel for the body, in addition to preventing a long-term chronic diseases.
  7. restoring digestion. It is necessary to restore the necessary digestive enzymes for proper digestion to support the health of the body. They can become damaged when your system is our of balance.

So often we think that taking a pill will detox us. And it may help somewhat. However we need to engage the larger problem of getting out of balance and restoring ourselves to be really healthy.

Unfortunately, all the environmental toxins we have now makes detoxification a must for good health.

Relieve Chronic Pain with Ayurveda

Relieving Chronic Pain - HSP Health Blog

Headache © by Pierre Willemin

Do you suffer from chronic pain?

Does it seem as if the amount of pain you are experiencing is growing over time rather than diminishing?

Do you have a hard time functioning because of chronic pain?

Is it hard to relieve your chronic pain with medication?

What Causes Chronic Pain?

There are many causes of pain. Certainly trauma can result in a permanent condition with daily and chronic pain. However, not all pain comes from trauma like accidents or injuries of some sort.

Much chronic pain comes from imbalances in the body that accumulate over time to the point that they interfere with the normal functioning of the body.

It may seem like a stretch, chronic pain most often comes from a variety of causes related to our living situation. According to Ayurveda, the following are the general types of imbalances at the source of most chronic conditions, including chronic pain:

  • Toxins accumulating in tissues and blocking circulation
  • Poor nutrition
  • Poor digestion
  • Imbalance of the nervous system
  • Accumulation of physical and mental stress
  • Lowering of natural resistance and immunity

The modern medical approach that matches drugs to symptoms does not completely address many of these factors. As a result, modern medicine often cannot fully remove the disorder and the condition becomes chronic. Chronic means that the condition persists over time even with the best modern medical treatment, indicating that some new approach is needed in our health care system.

Visualizing The Causes Of Chronic Pain

One way to begin to understand chronic pain is to visualize how your body works.

Our bodies are very complex, high functioning organisms. Each part of your body has a function to perform and cannot do so if interfered with.

Here are just four ways in which our bodies can be interfered with that will cause toxic buildup and eventually chronic pain:

  1. our digestion is not working properly. One particularly damaging cause of illness and chronic pain comes from our digestion system:
    1.  we are eating at the wrong time
    2. we eat too frequently so that our digestive system cannot digest all of the food we ate
    3. we eat the wrong foods we cannot easily digest which means food will not be processed. Processed foods and fast foods are particularly harmful. They will cause toxic accumulation resulting in disease and chronic pain
    4. eating when we are upset
    5. eating while watching TV, or engaging in any other activity will also create problems because out brains are occupied with the activity and not eating and so the meal does not register in the brain resulting in overeating and obesity.
  2. we accumulate toxins. So if you start to accumulate toxins in your cells, the cells cannot function well. Then a domino effect occurs that interferes with the functioning of other cells. When the process has gone on for long enough, impairment, pain and disease are the result.
  3. we have too much stress in our lives. Stress causes a rise in your blood sugar levels and if that situation is chronic, you body will think it is in a state of emergency for a long time, depleting all of your energy and food stores so that you become tired, depleted and your immune system becomes compromised. This situation also leads to metabolic disorder and eventually diabetes. Reducing stress helps prevent an chronic illness and the pain that goes with it.
  4. we have a lot of chaos and anxiety. The vata biosystem or dosha of the body governs our mind, brain and movement in the body. When our body is clogged in any way whether from toxins or food we are stopping the natural flow of nutrients to our cells and the elimination of wastes. Constipation is a perfect example of a vata imbalance that can result in chronic pain and disease. Perhaps you have had the experience of having a headache or joint pains that were released when the constipation ended.

What Can You Do To Relieve Chronic Pain?

When you become aware that stress, chaos, processed food, poor digestion and toxins can accumulate and cause disease as well as chronic pain, you can start to do something about it.

Here are some simple solutions:

  • eat a beet every day. Beets cleans the liver, the bile which often become thick and sluggish and improved the digestion. According to Dr. John Douillard of Lifespa, beets are a great cleanser for the body. Beets also help the lymph system located around your stomach which helps you immune system.
  • eat three meals a day in an agreeable environment to let your body fully digest each meal so that you do not accumulate undigested food in your body.
  • get 8 hours of sleep at night. You will have an easier time making changes if you are getting adequate rest.
  • drink water. Warm water consumed every 15-20 minuted throughout the day will help you remove toxins from the body.
  • find a good stress reduction practice for yourself. Many people like meditation.
  • add some  supplements:

There is so much you can do by changing diet and your daily schedule.

Relieving the burden on the body of accumulated toxins, will start a process of natural pain relief and is worth undertaking because no one deserves to live in pain.

What Are You Doing About Toxins In Your Brain: 10 Reasons To Detox Now

Herb Garden © by OakleyOriginals

Have you ever felt really sluggish after winter?

Have you ever noticed how when the seasons change you feel a need to restore and rejuvenate your body?

The balance in our bodies changes with seasons. Our agricultural system provides many foods year round regardless of the season, which is why we often act as if nutritionally there is only one season.

That thinking can get us in trouble because our bodies naturally want heavier, insulating food during the winter which creates congestion in our bodies and creates the need to restore our constitutional balance.

It is very important that we understand the detoxification process because otherwise we may think we are detoxing when in fact our approach skims the surface.

My favorite book about detoxification is Dr. John Douillard’s Colorado Cleanse. He has a very accessible way of writing which makes it easy to understand detoxing and a very specific but flexible system to do so.

You may already understand some of the reasons why you need to detox but there are others that you probably do not. This book was an eye opener.

Here are some of the insights I gained from reading his book:

  1. detoxing is now a necessity because of the severe pollution in all areas of our environment with chemicals, plastics, carcinogens of various types, heavy metals and carbon emissions.
  2. pollutants build up in the body causing impaired functioning and damage to our immune systems, weakening us over time. They can lead to chronic as well as severe diseases and premature aging.
  3. toxins can damage the pathways of the body. This means that oxygen and nourishment are blocked from  reaching our cells and therefore, our cells can become undernourished. To be truly healthy, our entire system needs abundant oxygen and nourishment.
  4. during the winter months, we eat heavier foods because they are warming and insulating. Those foods can build us and interfere with our digestive systems. It is no different that accumulation in your house.  At some point it becomes disabling.
  5. the liver can become overwhelmed and when it does it does not process the toxins. It send the toxins back in to the system to be stored in fat cells.
  6. fat cells in the brain can store toxins just like fat elsewhere in the body.
  7. the digestive system can handle a variety of foods including those that are hard to digest. If digesting food is a problem then a detoxification and restoration process would be helpful.
  8. Research shows that 95% of the body’s serotonin production comes from the digestive system. This New York Times article discusses the second brain and serotonin.
  9. Toxins trapped in our cells can include mental and emotional toxins weighed down by a sluggish and overloaded body. Processing emotions is an important part of health and if affected by our health regimen.
  10. stress is processed in our digestive system. So if our digestive system is compromised we may develop stress related diseases and have reduced resilience to life’s challenges.

Taking care of your health involves regular detoxification and restoration of your  body especially the digestive system.  When you do your body and emotions should feel lighter and you will be a lot happier.

I highly recommend Dr. Douillard work as a great way to learn about your body’s needs for higher quality of life.

Triphala: Super Herb for Super Health

Fruits of Phyllanthus emblica L. © by lalithamba

If I was stranded on a deserted island, I would consider triphala one of the few essentials to have with me.

What is triphala? Triphala is one of the most important herbal preparations in existence.

I have been using it for over a decade. I have not had the conditions that it helps with.  It helps with premature graying of the hair because premature graying and balding occur in my family but fortunately not on my head.  I am happy to give triphala the credit.

It is such a well-rounded source of healing that I use it every day, and it helps me a lot. Triphala offers healing benefits to the entire human system. It is a special herb used extensively in the ancient healing system of Ayurveda which is over 5000 years old.

According to the Ayurveda Encyclopedia, triphala is an herbal mixture of three herbs, amalaki, bibhitaki and haritaki. The combination of the three herbs in triphala provides an herbal formula that works as a mild laxative that has the ability to rejuvenate the human system.

These are the specific conditions that each of the herbs can help heal:

Amalaki: it is used for:

I consider triphala a natural balancer for the body.  It is gentle and inexpensive and a great preventative.

It is unrealistic to expect that we can prevent all imbalances in the body. Triphala is a great way to help yourself with the damage from stress, toxins in our food, water and air that we cannot control. It can help you feel more secure about your current and future health.

Triphala is one of my great finds in life. It would definitely get my vote on what to take with me on a deserted island.
