Why Ayurveda Works For Stress Reduction In HSPs

Ayurveda For Stress Reduction - HSP Health Blog

As a highly sensitive person, I experience a lot of stress.

Most highly sensitive people do.

It is not a choice. Our nervous systems are sponges for the stimulus around us.

We become flooded and overwhelmed. If we are not careful we can drown and become unable to function.

Stress Reduction: A Necessity For Highly Sensitive People

Stress reduction is as much a necessity for highly sensitive people as air is for everyone. We simply cannot live without it.

When the pace of the world was slower, highly sensitive people could manage the stresses of their nervous systems better. Now that there is so much activity in our social space, the challenge of stress reduction for highly sensitive people has become more difficult and even acute.

Highly sensitive people require:

  • the opportunity to process whatever they take in
  • rest when their nervous systems are overtaxed
  • a lifestyle that supports their stress reduction requirements
  • work that supports their health and quality of life.

How Stress Reduction Problems Become Worse

Highly sensitive people can suffer more when their lifestyles do not support their needs or make their health challenges worse.

The demands of being highly sensitive require that we commit a certain amount of our energy to it. When our energy is too low or diverted elsewhere, then we will suffer and most likely become sick.

The following can make it more difficult for us to handle our sensitive natures:

  1. water, air, and noise pollution
  2. processes food
  3. food with additives
  4. GMO foods
  5. leftover foods
  6. fried and fermented foods
  7. meat which is harder to digest than other foods
  8. staying up too late
  9. lack of exercise
  10. an irregular schedule which will upset the nervous system
  11. work that is too high pressure or too much drudgery
  12. relationships that are unsupportive, competitive or demanding

Much of the modern Western lifestyle is aggravating to highly sensitive people. It is not a fault of highly sensitive people but is is a reality we have to deal with.

Why Ayurveda Makes Stress Reduction Easier For Highly Sensitive People

There are so many challenges in modern life that make life hard for highly sensitive people.

I have tried many different methods to become healthier including juicing, vitamins, supplements of various kinds, meditation, Ayurveda, reiki, affirmations and the Sedona Method. I have read many books about health and well being.

I have discovered that most methods are a form of “managing the symptoms.” I did not just want to manage symptoms. I wanted to be healthy.

Being healthy is a different goal than not having symptoms of illness. I have learned that few approaches really get the job done.

Only one that I have found has really helped me to become well and that is Ayurveda.

Why Ayurveda Works For Stress Reduction In Highly Sensitive People

As a highly sensitive person, I need to simplify whenever I can.

Health can be complicated since we are complex beings – particularly if you are highly sensitive.

Ayurveda is the one discipline that actually lets me simplify my health regimen because

  • it is a group of health practices customized to support the highest well being of each individual
  • it is holistic and total.
  • it offers a set of daily practices that let me be at my best
  • its diet strategies ensure that the problems of food in our current world are not my problem
  • TM, the Ayurvedic meditation practice is easy. It relieves stress, heals the nervous system and supports the higher self. I have been doing it for almost 20 years and love it..
  • Ayurveda has a magnificent understanding of food and herbs. Their herbal remedies have helped me immensely.

There is a lot to learn in Ayurveda. Frankly I consider myself a student and always will.

Implementing Ayurveda

I have been integrating Ayurveda into my life slowly over time. I have noticed, however, that the more I do the less I am affected by stress.

I use the following Ayurvedic practices:

  • TM has been especially helpful since I find I am less affected by drama around me after practicing TM for so long. I have been told that it works on the nervous system and heals it, which I have found to be the case.
  • I find that the daily schedule has helped me reduce stress. I like to go to bed around 9PM and rise between 5-6AM.
  • I also like the daily massage, called Abhyangha. It is self massage using oil. It helps with detoxification and stress reduction.
  • the diet is very soothing. When you eat food that is wrong for you, it creates stress in the body. The digestive system becomes weaker and toxins build up in the body. The Ayurvedic diet and lifestyle work to prevent that outcome.
  • There are times when I have had difficulty maintaining the diet for schedule reasons. I have however, maintained a regimen of herbal remedies that support me and help me detox in spite of dietary lapses. The two herbs that I use religiously are triphala and neem.
  • Ayurveda offers herbs for stress. Ashwaghandha is the best known and I take it for stress relief.

I highly recommend Ayurveda for highly sensitive people for relieving stress and putting themselves onto a path that can work to achieve quality of life: something we deserve.

I believe that it is better to put your effort into becoming adept at a health system that eliminates problems that to continually try to fix that which does not work. Micromanaging health symptoms is not the same as becoming healthy.

The best book for learning about Ayurveda as a beginner is Deepak Chopra’s book, Perfect Health. It is a very accessible introduction to an old and skillful health tradition.

I love Ayurveda and hope you will give it a try.

Herbs That Control Blood Sugar

Sugar © by Uwe Hermann

When you put food into your mouth, you are not really eating.

Why?

Because most food has very little nourishment..

How this came to be is a story for another time.  However it is important for you to realize that what passes for food in the United States is sugar and a bunch of chemicals to give you a taste, but very little actual nourishment.

As a result, managing blood sugar levels is something that everyone needs to do.  The quality of much of our food is that bad. And given the amount of sugar in American food, managing blood sugar levels is going to be a challenge for the foreseeable future.

The Easiest Way To Manage Blood Sugar Levels

By far the easiest way to handle the blood sugar issue is to not have the problem. Depending on where you live and what types of food you have access to, it can be a challenge to put together a diet that is healthy: consisting of mainly vegetables, grains, fruits and legumes. Even those who have access to high quality food often find that having time to cook is difficult and healthy eating habits are difficult to achieve on a consistent basis.

Having said that, there is no question that making healthy eating an important long term priority is worth doing.  I would suggest starting with some good reading material:

  • one excellent resource is The Three Season Diet by Dr. John Douillard, which discusses the right way to eat for each season.  His book includes helpful recipes.
  • another is Perfect Health by Deepak Chopra.  This book is an excellent introduction to Ayurveda health practices including diet.  It includes food lists for each body type and can help you understand what is right for you.

While you are learning about and developing healthier eating habits herbs can come to the rescue to help you feel better.

 Herbs that Reduce Blood Sugar

There are a number of natural herbs that are very helpful for managing blood sugar.

They are:

  1. gymnema silvestre.  By all accounts, gymnema is the most useful herb for improving blood sugar levels.  The herb’s Hindu name refers to its function: “the sugar destroyer”.  According to WebMD, “Gymnema contains substances that decrease the absorption of sugar from the intestine. Gymnema may also increase the amount of insulin in the body and increase the growth of cells in the pancreas, which is the place in the body where insulin is made.”
  2. neem. Neem is an herbal remedy made from various parts of the neem tree grown primarily in southeast Asia, although it can be found in Florida in the US.  Neem is an herb that provides a lot of support to the immune system, treats a variety of illnesses and improves blood sugar levels according to WebMD.  It’s comprehensive benefits make it a worthwhile addition to a daily health regimen.
  3. ginseng.  Some studies have indicated that ginseng can reduce blood sugar levels. According to Science Daily, American ginseng improves blood sugar levels, although apparently ginseng root is not as effective.

In addition fenugreek and turmeric are two herbs that can be taken with as supplements or as spices  which also have a beneficial effect. Fortunately, these herbs and spices are relatively inexpensive and worth considering to avoid the pain and expenses of difficult chronic diseases like diabetes. I have used them and I have found them to be safe.

The Best Spring Home Detox Program

the colorado cleanse

I have taken the Colorado Cleanse and that is why I am discussing it now.

The Cleanse is the best detox program that I know of because it does the serious work of internal cleaning. It is very effective.

The Colorado Cleanse is not a superficial program. If you really would like to feel better and understand what you are doing and why this program will help you immensely.

I love how Dr. John Douillard, the program creator, explains  all aspects of it so that you become more empowered in your health care. Too often we are kept in the dark about how to become healthy. Dr. Douillard demystifies it – to his credit.

The program is offering a 15% discount to Early Birds starting on 2/28 for newsletter subscribers. The Cleanse can be done at any time; however, if you would like to try the group cleanse, it is offered this year from April 9-22.

Below are the details of the program. In the interest of full disclosure, I am an affiliate.

How The Colorado Cleanse Is Different

The Colorado Cleanse is a 2 week at-home detox and digestive reset program, designed to help detoxify fat soluble toxins that can store for years in the fat cells.* Unlike other fad cleanses, the Colorado Cleanse is rooted in sound medical science and the ancient cleansing wisdom of Ayurveda. This cleanse has been developed by Dr. Douillard through decades of clinical practice with thousands of successful cleansers, many of whom are now its biggest fans.

Where fad cleanses emphasize extreme fasting and dangerously unbalanced diets, the Colorado Cleanse relies on a gentle, simple diet that allows the body to burn fat without hunger pains.*

And where fad cleanses trigger blood sugar crashes, starvation-mode cravings and immediate binging afterwards, the Colorado Cleanse balances the blood sugar, allowing the body to enjoy the contented blissful energy of natural fat-metabolism, while you continue working and going about your daily life.*

The Colorado Cleanse is unique because it repairs the body’s detox and digestive channels before starting the detox.* Cleansing without this preparation can move toxins from one fat cell to another, which defeats the purpose of cleansing and often manifests as stubborn digestive weakness and symptoms of lymphatic congestion.*

The Colorado Cleanse is a 2 week at-home detox and digestive rejuvenation program.  You can do the Anytime Colorado Cleanse at your own convenience, or your can join us each Spring and Fall during the Group Colorado Cleanse.   The Colorado Cleanse can be done while working and leading your regular lifestyle.

Colorado Cleanse Success Stories

The Colorado Cleanse has helped thousands of people. Here are some of the many stories of people who have benefited from this wonderful detox program. I highly recommend that you read them.

What does the Cleanse involve?

During the 2-week Colorado Cleanse you will do a daily practice of yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises, 12 minutes of aerobic exercise, take Ayurvedic herbal formulas that support the detox process, and eat a special diet during the three phases*:

PRE-CLEANSE (Days 1-4)
To prepare your body to flush these toxins out of their storage sites, we will first make sure that your natural detox channels are functional by following an allergen-free whole foods diet, eating 4 specific foods each day, and taking the specified herbs.* This will help:

  • Balance Blood Sugar and Heal Intestinal Villi: Start by stabilizing your blood sugar and healing the intestinal mucosa of your intestinal tract.*
  • De-Stagnate the Lymphatic System: Improve the function of your lymphatic system, which drains the gut through the GALT (Gut Associated Lymphatic Tissue) where 80% of the body’s immune system is housed.*
  • Thin the Bile and Prepare to Detox: Once the detox channels of the lymph are moving, decongest the liver and thin the bile. Adequate bile flow is critical in optimizing and maintaining the detox channels of the body.*

MAIN CLEANSE (Days 5-11)
During the Main Cleanse, you will eat a simplified diet of nonfat khichari, which is a specific type of rice and beans prepared in a way that helps heal the digestion.* You will also drink increasing amounts of ghee each morning.

  • Reset Fat Metabolism, Flush the Liver and Detox Toxic Fat: Once the liver and bile are functioning better, cleanse the toxic chemicals that are stored in the fat cells.*
  • Self-Inquiry Exercises to help release old emotions, patterns, habits and behaviors that store in the fat cells.*

POST CLEANSE (Days 12-14)
After the Main Cleanse, you will return to the Pre Cleanse diet and add a Digestive Reset Protocol to boost your digestive fire.*

  • Reset Digestive Strength: After the cleanse, reset your upper digestive strength, which is the most common cause of digestive distress.*

AFTER THE CLEANSE
You will continue taking your herbal formulas for a few more weeks. In addition, we recommend that you follow a seasonal, whole foods diet, which you will naturally have the craving for now.

Ginger: A High Powered Herb For Great Health

Ginger Root © by Itinerant Tightwad

Ginger is one of the most important spices you can use not only because of its substantial affect on the digestion but also because of its ability to balance the three body-types.

Ginger For Balance

The three body types in Ayurveda are vata for movement, pitta for metabolism, and kapha for the body’s structure.  Vata, pitta and kapha are  parts of each of us but in different relative strength. That accounts for why some people prefer hot weather and others cool weather, why some love spicy food and others hate it and why some people love physical labor and sports and others do not.

If you know your predominant body type (see quiz), then you can choose the best ginger remedy for you. According to the Ayurvedic Encyclopedia,

  • vata needs ginger combined with rock salt
  • pitta needs ginger combines with rock candy
  • kapha requires ginger combined with honey.

Power Up Your Digestion With Ginger

Ginger has another important function. It helps with the digestion. That may not sound like much, but digestion is one of the most important functions of your body. According to MAPI, ginger:

  1. ginger stokes the digestive fire
  2. whets the appetite
  3. improves assimilation of food
  4. improves transportation of nutrients to targeted body tissues
  5. and clears the microcirculatory channels of the body to facilitate absorption of food and removal of wastes.

Ginger acts like a stimulant and a roto-rooter to make the digestive system more effective.

Food when it is not properly digested and assimilated in the body clogs the system attaching itself to tissues and organs.  It then reduces the functioning of the body and eventually creates disease. Taking ginger before lunch and dinner is a great way to ensure a healthy digestion.

Treating Disease With Ginger

Ginger has other benefits:

  • it acts as an analgesic, reducing pain, for people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis
  • it helps with motion sickness and has helped some pregnant women with morning sickness
  • it is used as a cold and flu remedy
  • it reduces the inflammation that can cause migraines
  • it has also been used in treat ovarian and colon cancer.

Ginger is a wonderful herb and spice that is easily incorporated into the diet and is worth considering to keep you in balance and your digestion humming on all cylinders.

2 Herbs For Great Skin

Women smiling © by dermatology.com

Would you like to have great skin?

Do you invest in your skin care and still feel dissatisfied with how your skin looks?

Many people waste a lot of money on their skin to look and feel better.  They do not understand their skin problems and reach for magic bullet solutions, sometimes making the problem worse.

There is a way out of this problem with some revisions in your self-care. First, we have to understand the causes of skin problems.

What Causes Skin Problems?

Skin problems come from may sources: viruses and bacteria are two common sources. However, the biggest source of skin problems is actually how we live.

Diet, water, rest and exercise play the most important roles in our skin condition. The seasons are also important since seasonal factors play an important role in skin aggravation: winter wind can dry the skin, summer heat can burn it. Toxins of all sorts can clog our bodies including our skin.

Here in the west, we think of skin as a layer of tissue covering our bodies. Ayurveda has a more complex and holistic understanding of this important organ.

The Seven Layers Of The Skin

Ayurveda has identified 7 layers to the skin.

According to this MAPI article on skin care, they are:

  1. Avabhasini: This is the outermost layer. It reflects the complexion and the quality of nutrition. It also acts as a mirror: it indicates whether the physiology as a whole is balanced or imbalanced, and whether there is inner health or disorder. The avabhasini layer also reflects the aura of the individual-if there is inner bliss, it shows on this layer. It does not have its own color: it reflects the colors of the inner layers. Internal and external re-hydration and regular massage supports the health and appearance of the avabhasini layer of the skin.
  2. Lohita: This layer supports the outermost layer. It indicates the quality and health of the blood. If there is ama (impurities) in the blood, it impacts the aura of the outer layer and accentuates sensitivity to the sun. The color of this layer resembles molten iron.
  3. Shweta: This is a white layer, and it provides balance to skin color, lightening the darker colors of the inner layers.
  4. Tamra: This layer nurtures the upper layers of the skin. It supports the immune system. This is the layer that helps the skin perform its function of being a “barrier. Skin infections reflect an imbalance in this layer. It is copper-colored.
  5. Vedini: This fifth layer sensually links the skin to the rest of the body. It is the center for transformation of sensation-feeling of pain, for example.
  6. Rohini: This layer supports healing and regeneration. Imbalance in this layer retards healing and the disappearance of scars over time. A balanced diet, rich in nutritional value, supports the rohini layer.
  7. Mamsadhara: This innermost layer is the platform for the skin’s stability and firmness. When this layer is in balance, the skin looks young and supple.
All of these layers of the skin can become unbalanced and therefore contribute to skin problems.

The Skin And The Immune System

All parts of the body are vulnerable to toxins including the skin.

The immune system protects us from toxins and our body expels them in various ways. The skin plays an important role in the release of these toxins from the body. Whenever our skin is showing signs of some sort of damage, it is because of some imbalance or toxins in the body that need to be released.

Most Common Causes Of Skin Problems

The following are among the most common lifestyle causes of skin problems:

  • dehydration
  • poor quality food: processed, fast food, and leftovers
  • wrong food for our system
  • lack of sleep
  • stress of all kinds
  • overwork
  • weather changes that are a problem for your body time
  • lack of exercise

The best way to improve skin conditions is to begin changing our lifestyles.

Improving Skin Condition

Diet, exercise, hydration, stress reduction and a good night’s sleep will improve skin resilience and health.

In addition these herbs will help remove toxins from the skin and improve appearance:

  1. neem is one of the most important herbs for the skin; it’s leaves, bark and oil are all used in healing preparations. Neem has antiviral, antibacterial and antifungical benefits.
  2. according to the Neem Foundation, neem is useful in treating fungus based conditions: athlete’s foot, ringworm and candida.
  3. neem has been used to successfully treat psoriasis, eczema and other conditions.
  4. neem is antibacterial properties help heal sores and burns.
  5. turmeric is known as a wound healer. Turmeric improves skin conditions by purifying the blood.
Using neem and turmeric capsules will go a long way to improving your skin. When combined with good lifestyle practices, you have the opportunity to create long-term healthy glowing skin and save a lot of money on expensive skin preparations.

Massage For Great Skin

A daily massage is a daily practice that makes skin feel wonderful while it helps remove toxins.  There are two different types: warm oil massage and dry massage.

  1. Warm oil massage or abhyanga is a head-to-toe form of self massage that provides deep healing to the tissues.  Using herbal oils provides nourishment and detoxification to the many levels of the skin and joints. It is done daily for maximum effect.  Daily massage has a calming effect on the entire being and is a great way not only to have great skin but also to reduce stress.  One of the best results of daily warm oil massage is incredible soft skin!
  2. Dry massage also called garshan is great for treating cellulite which is caused by a buildup of toxic fat and poor circulation.  Garshan like warm oil massage is conducted in the morning using silk gloves which stimulate the skin resulting in the removal of toxins.

Both types of massage are beneficial depending on your need. This Ayurvedic massage pdf gives instructions for both massage types.

Getting Started On Creating Great Skin

Great health starts with good food, healthy water, stress relief practices, and exercise. Adding herbs for skin can accelerate your healing, and massage will make your skin soft and help you feel wonderful and save you a lot of money.

9 Ways Mangistha Destroys Toxins In The Body

wild madder close-up

Would you like to know that your immune system is functioning well and able to protect you?

Manjistha is a wonderful Ayurvedic herb that does just that.

Manjistha known as rubia cordifolia is a climbing medicinal plant found in the Himalayas. It’s roots are used to create the medicinal supplement known as manjistha. Manjistha is a multi purpose healer which addresses many conditions and symptoms. However, its most important role is the reduction of toxic reactions caused by detoxification sometimes called a healing crisis.

When toxins are loosened in the body they can enter the blood and other parts of the body causing serious damage. In addition, when detoxification happens too rapidly, various “healing” reactions can take place including psoriasis and ulcers as described by Vaidya Mishra, an Ayurvedic healer.

Manjistha is considered the best herb for blood purification since it supports detoxification when toxins can be removed from the liver and enter the blood stream. Toxins can also be found in the blood when the various channels of the body are closed preventing the normal processing and removal of toxins from the body.

Many of the conditions helped by manjistha involve the blood and organs that affected by blood and blood toxicity. These are some important conditions that benefit from using manjistha:

  1. skin diseases. Manjistha heals a variety of skin problems including eczema, psoriasis since the skin is a detoxifying organ.
  2. menstrual problems. Manjistha treats menstrual conditions since it purifies the blood.  It helps post-natal healing of the uterus.
  3. blood resolution. Manjistha regulates blood clots, blood pressure, cleanse the blood and treats heart disease.
  4. immune system
  5. removes renal and gall stone stones. Manjistha cleans and regulates the pancreas, spleen liver and kidneys which all have a role to play in digestion and toxin removal.
  6. urinary system disorders
  7. tumors. Manjistha destroys both benign and malignant tumors.
  8. some forms of herpes. Manjistha can treat herpes that is in the bloodstream.
  9. diabetic ulcers of the leg. Manjistha can help heal this debilitating condition.

Manjistha is a very useful herb for people who have eaten toxic diets for a long time, are suffering from toxic emotions and people who are in the process of detoxifying their bodies. It is a wonderful support for the immune system since it eliminates toxins that could become overwhelming to the immune system and increase blockages in the body.

Using manjistha is a great way to reduce the potential for serious illness.

What Are You Doing About Toxins In Your Brain: 10 Reasons To Detox Now

Herb Garden © by OakleyOriginals

Have you ever felt really sluggish after winter?

Have you ever noticed how when the seasons change you feel a need to restore and rejuvenate your body?

The balance in our bodies changes with seasons. Our agricultural system provides many foods year round regardless of the season, which is why we often act as if nutritionally there is only one season.

That thinking can get us in trouble because our bodies naturally want heavier, insulating food during the winter which creates congestion in our bodies and creates the need to restore our constitutional balance.

It is very important that we understand the detoxification process because otherwise we may think we are detoxing when in fact our approach skims the surface.

My favorite book about detoxification is Dr. John Douillard’s Colorado Cleanse. He has a very accessible way of writing which makes it easy to understand detoxing and a very specific but flexible system to do so.

You may already understand some of the reasons why you need to detox but there are others that you probably do not. This book was an eye opener.

Here are some of the insights I gained from reading his book:

  1. detoxing is now a necessity because of the severe pollution in all areas of our environment with chemicals, plastics, carcinogens of various types, heavy metals and carbon emissions.
  2. pollutants build up in the body causing impaired functioning and damage to our immune systems, weakening us over time. They can lead to chronic as well as severe diseases and premature aging.
  3. toxins can damage the pathways of the body. This means that oxygen and nourishment are blocked from  reaching our cells and therefore, our cells can become undernourished. To be truly healthy, our entire system needs abundant oxygen and nourishment.
  4. during the winter months, we eat heavier foods because they are warming and insulating. Those foods can build us and interfere with our digestive systems. It is no different that accumulation in your house.  At some point it becomes disabling.
  5. the liver can become overwhelmed and when it does it does not process the toxins. It send the toxins back in to the system to be stored in fat cells.
  6. fat cells in the brain can store toxins just like fat elsewhere in the body.
  7. the digestive system can handle a variety of foods including those that are hard to digest. If digesting food is a problem then a detoxification and restoration process would be helpful.
  8. Research shows that 95% of the body’s serotonin production comes from the digestive system. This New York Times article discusses the second brain and serotonin.
  9. Toxins trapped in our cells can include mental and emotional toxins weighed down by a sluggish and overloaded body. Processing emotions is an important part of health and if affected by our health regimen.
  10. stress is processed in our digestive system. So if our digestive system is compromised we may develop stress related diseases and have reduced resilience to life’s challenges.

Taking care of your health involves regular detoxification and restoration of your  body especially the digestive system.  When you do your body and emotions should feel lighter and you will be a lot happier.

I highly recommend Dr. Douillard work as a great way to learn about your body’s needs for higher quality of life.

Triphala: Super Herb for Super Health

Fruits of Phyllanthus emblica L. © by lalithamba

If I was stranded on a deserted island, I would consider triphala one of the few essentials to have with me.

What is triphala? Triphala is one of the most important herbal preparations in existence.

I have been using it for over a decade. I have not had the conditions that it helps with.  It helps with premature graying of the hair because premature graying and balding occur in my family but fortunately not on my head.  I am happy to give triphala the credit.

It is such a well-rounded source of healing that I use it every day, and it helps me a lot. Triphala offers healing benefits to the entire human system. It is a special herb used extensively in the ancient healing system of Ayurveda which is over 5000 years old.

According to the Ayurveda Encyclopedia, triphala is an herbal mixture of three herbs, amalaki, bibhitaki and haritaki. The combination of the three herbs in triphala provides an herbal formula that works as a mild laxative that has the ability to rejuvenate the human system.

These are the specific conditions that each of the herbs can help heal:

Amalaki: it is used for:

  1. anemia
  2. arthritis
  3. asthma
  4. bronchitis
  5. colitis
  6. constipation
  7. diabetes
  8. duodenal and gastric ulcers
  9. eczema
  10. eye disorders
  11. chronic fever
  12. gout
  13. premature graying and balding
  14. heart attack prevention
  15. hepatitis
  16. hemorrhoids
  17. high blood pressure
  18. insomnia
  19. jaundice
  20. mental disorders
  21. menorraghia
  22. osteoporosis
  23. rebuilds blood
  24. bones, cells and tissues
  25. rheumatism
  26. liver and spleen weakness
  27. tuberculaosis
  28. urinary disorders and difficulties
  29. vertigo
  30. vomiting

Bibhitaki

  1. colds, coughs and bronchitis
  2. chronic diarrhea
  3. dysentery
  4. eye disorders
  5. headache
  6. hemorrhoids
  7. gastro-intestinal diseases
  8. digestive disorders leading to obesity
  9. laryngitis
  10. liver disorders
  11. mucus
  12. nausea
  13. stones including urinary tract stones
  14. vomiting
  15. sore throat and voice problems

Haritaki

  1. anemia
  2. cough
  3. hemorrhoids
  4. diarrhea
  5. gas
  6. fevers
  7. malabsorption of nutrients
  8. urinary diseases
  9. tumors
  10. blood purification
  11. spleen and liver disorders
  12. ulcerated gums
  13. muscular rheumatism
  14. heart
  15. skin conditions including itching
  16. edema
  17. nervous disorders

I consider triphala a natural balancer for the body.  It is gentle and inexpensive and a great preventative.

It is unrealistic to expect that we can prevent all imbalances in the body. Triphala is a great way to help yourself with the damage from stress, toxins in our food, water and air that we cannot control. It can help you feel more secure about your current and future health.

Triphala is one of my great finds in life. It would definitely get my vote on what to take with me on a deserted island.

Gokshura is also called puncture vine.  It is used in Ayurveda to treat genitourinary conditions and remove toxins from the body. Diabetes creates excessive urination which is why it is classified as a urinary disease in Ayurveda.   Gokshura which is used to support the urinary system of the body is considered an important herb for treating diabetic urinary symptoms in Ayurveda.

According to the Ayurveda Encyclopedia, gokshura impacts the health of four systems of the body:

  • the nervous system
  • reproductive system
  • respiratory system
  • urinary systems

Gokshura improves low testosterone levels and all of the conditions and symptoms associated with it. According to WebMD low testosterone is a factor in depression, cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and sleep issues.  In improving testosterone, gokshura supports the strength and stamina of the entire body by building all of the tissues including the tissues of the reproductive system.

Gokshura has sweet, cooling and alkaline promoting properties which means it nourishes at the same time it improves the digestive fire.  It is one of the rare herbs that promotes digestive fire and cools at the same time, making it beneficial for pitta dosha which  in Ayurveda body typing means a naturally warm body temperature and also governs the digestive fire.

Gokshura improves our health by ” nourishing ojas, which is the semi-vibrational material that connects body and soul and gives strength to the whole body” according to Shaka Vansya Ayurveda.

Gokshura removes toxins from the genitourinary tract including acidic toxins which are common in the modern Western diet. It is beneficial for highly sensitive people with diabetes not only because it removes toxins that may contribute to the disease but also because it pacifies vata dosha. What this means is that HSP’s with diabetes can improve their excessive urination symptoms using gokshura and also heal their nervous system at the same time.

Diabetes can be created by an imbalance in any of the three Ayurvedic doshas: vata, pitta and kapha.  Vata is the dosha that has particular significance for highly sensitive people since it manages the brain and the nervous system.

Gokshura helps HSP’s improve their urinary system symptoms, improve their strength, heal their nervous systems, and detox as well.  It may improve depression and insomnia symptoms as well. It is helpful for diabetes treatment which makes it a good herb to know about.
