Treat Depression and Anxiety With St. John’s Wort

Treat Anxiety And Depression With St. John's Wort - HSP Health Blog

Depression and anxiety ar common in modern life.

Given the sensitive biology of highly sensitive people, they may be even more common among HSPs.

What are the causes?

Common Causes Of Depression And Anxiety

Depression and anxiety can come from physical causes as many HSPs know and also from situational causes.

Many people when they experience a significant loss in their life – a layoff from their employment, or a car accident –  can feel sad, lost, or hurt. These feelings are legitimate responses to real difficulties in life.  When feeling lost, hopeless, helpless, scared, alone, and anxious, we lose our desire for doing the normal activities of daily life. The difficult feelings caused by challenging life circumstances can last for a long time –  days, weeks even months.

It can seem that we are grasping at straws when we talk about the causes of depression. It has been attributed to past abuse, medications, personal conflicts, a loss or death, genetics, substance abuse, major life change, a major illness, or other traumatic events. All of these reasons may be right.

Different Degrees Of Depression

Depression does not come in one flavor.

An individual can be suffering from:

  1. major depressive disorder (MDD) which can causes disruption of sleep, work, and eating patterns as well as interfere with a person’s ability to enjoy simple pleasures. A person suffering from MDD will have these debilitating symptoms for nearly every day in a two week span or longer
  2. chronic depression which has the same but less intense symptoms of major depressive disorder although it usually lasts longer
  3. atypical depression which is unusual often starts in the teenage years and expresses itself as  overeating, oversleeping, fatigue, and sensitivity to rejection.
  4. seasonal depression which will affect one’s mood when the season changes usually starts in fall and ends around spring time.

These are just naming a few on the broad spectrum out their affecting nearly one out of ten people.

 How St. John’s Wort Helps

St. John’s Wort is a natural healing herb.

The herbal remedy is made from its flowers and leaves. It contains hyperforin, hypericin and pseudohypericin, three components scientists believe relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety. St. John’s Wort has also been used to help people suffering from panic attacks, wounds, headaches, sleep disorders, nerve pain, and mild depression.

St. John’s wort has been used to relieve these symptoms:

  • being really tired
  • loss of sleep
  • appetite
  • insomnia
  • menopausal symptoms
  • eczema
  • anxiety
  • mild depression
  • trouble sleeping

Cautions For Using St. John’s Wort

According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, St. John’s wort blocks your body’s abilities to reabsorb a chemical in your brain called serotonin leading to antidepressant effects. If it is taken with other antidepressant medications, you can trigger some complications like serotonin syndrome.

It can interact with other medications you are on and interfere with some antibiotics, benzodiazepine tranquilizers, birth control pills, anesthetics, some HIV treatments, rizatriptan, and reserpine.

If you are taking other medications it is wise to talk to your doctor before using Saint John’s wort. St. John’s Wort can also increase sun sensitivity.

Relieving Depression And Anxiety

St. John’s Wort is certainly worth considering if you are looking for a natural way to help manage depression or anxiety for a short period of time. For highly sensitive people who are not on medications it can be a useful herb.

It is not a substitute for engaging with the challenge of being highly sensitive, the lifestyle needs of HSPs and necessary lifestyle modifications that the highly sensitive require to be at their best. It can, however, have a place as a short term solution while other changes are being made.

Herbs That Control Blood Sugar

Sugar © by Uwe Hermann

When you put food into your mouth, you are not really eating.

Why?

Because most food has very little nourishment..

How this came to be is a story for another time.  However it is important for you to realize that what passes for food in the United States is sugar and a bunch of chemicals to give you a taste, but very little actual nourishment.

As a result, managing blood sugar levels is something that everyone needs to do.  The quality of much of our food is that bad. And given the amount of sugar in American food, managing blood sugar levels is going to be a challenge for the foreseeable future.

The Easiest Way To Manage Blood Sugar Levels

By far the easiest way to handle the blood sugar issue is to not have the problem. Depending on where you live and what types of food you have access to, it can be a challenge to put together a diet that is healthy: consisting of mainly vegetables, grains, fruits and legumes. Even those who have access to high quality food often find that having time to cook is difficult and healthy eating habits are difficult to achieve on a consistent basis.

Having said that, there is no question that making healthy eating an important long term priority is worth doing.  I would suggest starting with some good reading material:

  • one excellent resource is The Three Season Diet by Dr. John Douillard, which discusses the right way to eat for each season.  His book includes helpful recipes.
  • another is Perfect Health by Deepak Chopra.  This book is an excellent introduction to Ayurveda health practices including diet.  It includes food lists for each body type and can help you understand what is right for you.

While you are learning about and developing healthier eating habits herbs can come to the rescue to help you feel better.

 Herbs that Reduce Blood Sugar

There are a number of natural herbs that are very helpful for managing blood sugar.

They are:

  1. gymnema silvestre.  By all accounts, gymnema is the most useful herb for improving blood sugar levels.  The herb’s Hindu name refers to its function: “the sugar destroyer”.  According to WebMD, “Gymnema contains substances that decrease the absorption of sugar from the intestine. Gymnema may also increase the amount of insulin in the body and increase the growth of cells in the pancreas, which is the place in the body where insulin is made.”
  2. neem. Neem is an herbal remedy made from various parts of the neem tree grown primarily in southeast Asia, although it can be found in Florida in the US.  Neem is an herb that provides a lot of support to the immune system, treats a variety of illnesses and improves blood sugar levels according to WebMD.  It’s comprehensive benefits make it a worthwhile addition to a daily health regimen.
  3. ginseng.  Some studies have indicated that ginseng can reduce blood sugar levels. According to Science Daily, American ginseng improves blood sugar levels, although apparently ginseng root is not as effective.

In addition fenugreek and turmeric are two herbs that can be taken with as supplements or as spices  which also have a beneficial effect. Fortunately, these herbs and spices are relatively inexpensive and worth considering to avoid the pain and expenses of difficult chronic diseases like diabetes. I have used them and I have found them to be safe.

13 Herbs For Detoxing

Mixed Salad © by the Italian voice

My cat, Kelly, loves to eat my asparagus fern.

She is detoxing.

I learned from Dr. John Douillard of Lifespa in Colorado that new greens which emerge from the ground in the spring are meant to help us cleanse our intestinal tract after a winter of eating heavy insulating foods. There are specific steps in an effective detox:  Which Detoxing Steps Are You Missing?

In order to detox well, you need the right diet and practices that will support the cleansing of your system.  In addition, there are herbs that are especially effective for removing the toxins that make you sluggish and create disease.

These are 13 Ayurvedic herbs for an effective detox and rejuvenation program (1)(2):

  1. for cleaning the lymphatic system, where our immune system is located: manjistha. According to the Ayurvedic Encyclopedia, manjistha is one of the best herbs for blood purification and for detoxing the liver of environmental toxins which are increasingly a reason for poor health. It also cleans and regulates the liver, spleen, pancreas and kidneys, all organs which are important parts of the digestive system, and is anti-cancer and anti-tumor.
  2. for repairing the mucus membrane of the gut, which becomes dysfunctional when clogged by heavy foods: turmeric. Turmeric helps relieve the mucus buildup that comes from eating heavy foods, regulates the metabolism, is a natural antibiotic that improves intestinal flora and purifies the blood.  It improves IBS, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s Disease and all inflammatory conditions.
  3. thinning the bile so that toxins do not get backed up in the liver forcing them into the body where they will be stored in fat cells: beets, fenugreek, cinnamon.
    • Beets improve lymph, liver and gall bladder functioning and act as a laxative as well.
    • Fenugreek is a rejuvenating herb that improves liver function and diabetic symptoms.
    • Cinnamon is a strengthener: it strengthens the metabolism, one’s constitution and the individual organs of digestion: the liver, spleen pancreas and kidneys.
  4. cleansing the liver  for proper processing of fat soluble toxins: amalaki, guduchi, barberry.
    • Amalaki cleans the intestines, stops stomach and intestinal inflammation, and improves the symptoms of diabetes and gastrointestinal conditions.
    • Guduchi is a blood purifier that improves digestion. It supports the immune system.
    • Barberry is a kind of decongestant in that it reduces fat, reduces congestion in the stomach, regulates liver functioning and destroys toxins in the body.
  5. cell regeneration: shilajit. Shilajit restores oxygen and nutrition to depleted cells and strengthens the immune system.
  6. balancing blood sugar: gymnema sylvestre removes sugar from the pancreas and restores pancreatic function and making it one of the most important  Ayurvedic herbs for diabetes.
  7. restoring digestion: ginger, black pepper, long pepper. These three herbs all act on digestion to stimulate and restore the digestive fire.

These are all important and useful herbs for anyone seeking a strong digestive detox. I have personally used then and have been very pleased with the improvement to my well-being. They are worth considering as part of a detoxification plan.

Ginger: A High Powered Herb For Great Health

Ginger Root © by Itinerant Tightwad

Ginger is one of the most important spices you can use not only because of its substantial affect on the digestion but also because of its ability to balance the three body-types.

Ginger For Balance

The three body types in Ayurveda are vata for movement, pitta for metabolism, and kapha for the body’s structure.  Vata, pitta and kapha are  parts of each of us but in different relative strength. That accounts for why some people prefer hot weather and others cool weather, why some love spicy food and others hate it and why some people love physical labor and sports and others do not.

If you know your predominant body type (see quiz), then you can choose the best ginger remedy for you. According to the Ayurvedic Encyclopedia,

  • vata needs ginger combined with rock salt
  • pitta needs ginger combines with rock candy
  • kapha requires ginger combined with honey.

Power Up Your Digestion With Ginger

Ginger has another important function. It helps with the digestion. That may not sound like much, but digestion is one of the most important functions of your body. According to MAPI, ginger:

  1. ginger stokes the digestive fire
  2. whets the appetite
  3. improves assimilation of food
  4. improves transportation of nutrients to targeted body tissues
  5. and clears the microcirculatory channels of the body to facilitate absorption of food and removal of wastes.

Ginger acts like a stimulant and a roto-rooter to make the digestive system more effective.

Food when it is not properly digested and assimilated in the body clogs the system attaching itself to tissues and organs.  It then reduces the functioning of the body and eventually creates disease. Taking ginger before lunch and dinner is a great way to ensure a healthy digestion.

Treating Disease With Ginger

Ginger has other benefits:

  • it acts as an analgesic, reducing pain, for people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis
  • it helps with motion sickness and has helped some pregnant women with morning sickness
  • it is used as a cold and flu remedy
  • it reduces the inflammation that can cause migraines
  • it has also been used in treat ovarian and colon cancer.

Ginger is a wonderful herb and spice that is easily incorporated into the diet and is worth considering to keep you in balance and your digestion humming on all cylinders.

Guduchi: 9 Ways To Protect Your Health

3548774532_dd3ff37800

Guduchi Plant

Guduchi is another exceptional herb used extensively in Ayurveda, the ancient Indian health care system.

Found in the Himalayas, guduchi is one of the few herbs that balances the entire body or all the doshas, the name for the three body-systems of Ayurveda.

Over thousands of years, Ayurveda has catalogued all of the physical affects of food, beverages and herbs on the body. It has accomplished this feat by identifying the qualities in each food.

Let’s consider a ripe banana. It has the qualities of being sweet, heating and sour. It affects the body’s doshas with its smoothness and heaviness. Some of these qualities are obvious and others are more subtle.  We can taste the sweetness of a banana and experience its smoothness and heaviness. The heating and sour actions of the banana are felt in the body after the fruit has been eaten.

Guduchi has the following physical effects: heating, bitter, astringent, light, unctuous, sweet and destroys toxins. It balances all of three doshas or bioenergies of the body: data – air and movement, pitta – digestion, and kappa – tissues and lubrication.

It is such a strong supporter of the immune system that it is thought to help increase the life span.  Guduchi offers these heath benefits:

  1. improved immune system. It strengthens the immune system and helps with autoimmune diseases.  It also reduced the toxic effects of chemotherapy. By strengthening the immune system, it reduces the potential for cancer.
  2. improves conditions in the joints like gout and arthritis by acting as an anti-inflammatory.
  3. heals liver damage caused by alcohol, drugs and medicinal drugs. It repairs the liver tissue.
  4. heals skin diseases like eczema, psoriasis and systemic lupus erythmatosis.
  5. heals gastrointestinal disease by healing various bowel conditions and rebalancing intestinal flora.
  6. regulates blood sugar levels.
  7. calms the nervous system.
  8. supports the reproductive system.
  9. rejuvenates the body.
Guduchi is known “as the one that protects the body”. It’s healing and protective abilities are prized in Ayurveda.  It is worth considering as part of a health regimen.
For highly sensitive people who suffer disabling stress and can be weakened by overstimulation, guduchi can provide some protection against the harms of modern life.

Turmeric: 18 Ways To Good Health

Turmeric © by Steven Jackson Photography

It is amazing how great health can be as close as our kitchen spice rack.

For thousands of years, food and herbs have been used for their healing properties. Some herbs are almost worshipped for their healing gifts.  Turmeric is one such herb.

Some herbs are valued solely for their medicinal properties. Neem would be an example of a plant used primarily for medicinal purposes.

Turmeric is different, however. It is an important cooking herb as well as a medicinal remedy.  In India, curry is one of their most common dishes and it usually includes turmeric.

Why is turmeric such a wonder herb? Turmeric is one of the few healing herbs on the world that has such a comprehensive list of benefits that it is considered a pharmacy unto itself. (Neem is also.)

Turmeric is a purifier. It is most frequently used to purify the blood which helps prevent blood clots. Since the blood circulates the entire blood, all of the purification capabilities of turmeric removing bacteria and free radicals mean that more oxygen and nutrients can get to the cells and the lymph system can do its job of removing wastes better.

Turmeric has the following effects on the body:

  1. alliterative.  Turmeric doesn’t just treat a medical condition, it also restores health.
  2. analgesic.  Turmeric reduces pain.
  3. anti-inflammatory. Turmeric is used extensively to heal wounds and improves arthritis symptoms.
  4. antibacterial. Turmeric has many properties which help with wound healing.
  5. anti-tumor, which means that in cleaning the body, tumors are less able to grow.
  6. antiallergic. Turmeric help with food and other forms of allergies.
  7. antioxident. Turmeric has the ability to clean up the free radicals created through stress and lifestyle choices.
  8. antiseptic. This is another of turmeric’s wound cleaning properties.
  9. antispasmodic. It relaxes muscles which reduces digestive and menstrual cramps.
  10. astringent. Turmeric dries out the tissues removing toxins, fat and excess fluid.
  11. cardiovasular. Since turmeric cleans the blood, the heart will be pumping cleaner blood and staying healthier over time. It’s anti-inflammatory properties reduces the occurrence of platelet clumping, which can cause blood clots and other problems.
  12. carminative, which means it reduces gas in the body
  13. cholagogue, which means it stimulates the gall bladders production of bile.
  14. improves digestion. Turmeric stimulates a sluggish digestion causing food to be properly digested and preventing the toxic buildup of undigested food.
  15. diuretic. Turmeric has astringent properties that remove excess fund from the body.
  16. vulnerary, refers to the ability to heal wounds.
  17. cleans the blood.
  18. supports the reproductive system.
Turmeric had strong wound healing properties and has been used to treat the following serious modern illnesses:
  1. arthritis
  2. cancer
  3. std’s
  4. alzheimer’s
  5. diabetes
  6. MS
  7. HIV
  8. illnesses related to the digestive system including IBS, indigestion, URI, kidney infections, gallstones, hemorrhoids, liver disease and food poisoning
  9. illnesses from blood toxins
  10. skin diseases including leprosy.
Turmeric is an herb that is safe and inexpensive to use and can be a very useful herb for keeping  toxins from taking hold in your body, which can set the stage for chronic disease and fatal illnesses like cancer. It is a great way to help heal existing diseases like arthritis, diabetes and digestive problems.
When combined with the Ayurvedic herbs tulsi and triphala for long term use, turmeric offers deep cleansing and rebalancing of the body.
Turmeric is a phenomenal herb that is worth taking every day to maintaining great health.

9 Ways Mangistha Destroys Toxins In The Body

wild madder close-up

Would you like to know that your immune system is functioning well and able to protect you?

Manjistha is a wonderful Ayurvedic herb that does just that.

Manjistha known as rubia cordifolia is a climbing medicinal plant found in the Himalayas. It’s roots are used to create the medicinal supplement known as manjistha. Manjistha is a multi purpose healer which addresses many conditions and symptoms. However, its most important role is the reduction of toxic reactions caused by detoxification sometimes called a healing crisis.

When toxins are loosened in the body they can enter the blood and other parts of the body causing serious damage. In addition, when detoxification happens too rapidly, various “healing” reactions can take place including psoriasis and ulcers as described by Vaidya Mishra, an Ayurvedic healer.

Manjistha is considered the best herb for blood purification since it supports detoxification when toxins can be removed from the liver and enter the blood stream. Toxins can also be found in the blood when the various channels of the body are closed preventing the normal processing and removal of toxins from the body.

Many of the conditions helped by manjistha involve the blood and organs that affected by blood and blood toxicity. These are some important conditions that benefit from using manjistha:

  1. skin diseases. Manjistha heals a variety of skin problems including eczema, psoriasis since the skin is a detoxifying organ.
  2. menstrual problems. Manjistha treats menstrual conditions since it purifies the blood.  It helps post-natal healing of the uterus.
  3. blood resolution. Manjistha regulates blood clots, blood pressure, cleanse the blood and treats heart disease.
  4. immune system
  5. removes renal and gall stone stones. Manjistha cleans and regulates the pancreas, spleen liver and kidneys which all have a role to play in digestion and toxin removal.
  6. urinary system disorders
  7. tumors. Manjistha destroys both benign and malignant tumors.
  8. some forms of herpes. Manjistha can treat herpes that is in the bloodstream.
  9. diabetic ulcers of the leg. Manjistha can help heal this debilitating condition.

Manjistha is a very useful herb for people who have eaten toxic diets for a long time, are suffering from toxic emotions and people who are in the process of detoxifying their bodies. It is a wonderful support for the immune system since it eliminates toxins that could become overwhelming to the immune system and increase blockages in the body.

Using manjistha is a great way to reduce the potential for serious illness.

Controlling HIV With Neem

Did you know that HIV can be controlled with neem?

Medical News Today has reported today that a research scientist, Sonia Arora, assistant professor at Kean University in New Jersey has discovered how neem reduces HIV in the bodies of AIDS patients.

What Is Neem?

Neem is an unusual tree located mostly in southeast Asia that for many centuries has been aptly named “the village pharmacy.”  Neem is antiseptic, antibacterial, antiviral, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer and anti fungal.

Interestingly, all part of the neem tree are used in healing. A miracle herb to many,

  1. neem heals all kinds of skin diseases, including acne, psoriasis and eczema
  2. neem is good for the hair and also helps with head lice
  3. neem makes an excellent toothpaste and prevents gum disease.  The twigs are used as toothbrushes.
  4. neem is anti-microbial and used for wound cleaning
  5. neem is used to reduce cholesterol and relieve high blood pressure
  6. neem reduces inflammation and helps heal rheumatoid arthritis, gout and osteoarthritis
  7. neem helps with stomach acidity and is believed to help stabilize blood sugar and is therefore used to relieve diabetic symptoms
  8. neem purifies the blood and relieves infections
  9. neem has been used for many years to heal malaria
  10. neem is also a spermicide and
  11. neem is a pesticide.

How Neem Treats AIDS

There has been anecdotal evidence that neem treats AIDS for some time.  However, for some reason, the possibility of using it to treat AIDS never caught on.  It is strange that it did not since neem is an extremely inexpensive herb to buy.  Not only can it treat AIDS, but its many properties give so many other health benefits as well.

Professor Arora investigated the claims about neem and AIDS and found two reports that showed that when AIDS patients in Nigeria and India were given neem extracts, the particles of HIV in their blood were significantly reduced.

Professor Arora’s next step was to identify what in the neem extract, which comes from neem tree seeds, was creating the significant improvement in the AIDS patients. She and her team were able to identify 20 compounds in the neem extract. When tested against the proteins which support the HIV life cycle, she discovered that most compounds found in the neem extracts successfully attacked the protein, HIV protease, which is essential for making new copies of the virus.

Neem is a complex and valuable herb which has the potential to make significant inroads into the treatment of HIV and drastically reduce the pain, suffering and expense of this dreaded disease.

Anyone can benefit from using neem. AIDS patients have an especially important reason.

What Are You Doing About Toxins In Your Brain: 10 Reasons To Detox Now

Herb Garden © by OakleyOriginals

Have you ever felt really sluggish after winter?

Have you ever noticed how when the seasons change you feel a need to restore and rejuvenate your body?

The balance in our bodies changes with seasons. Our agricultural system provides many foods year round regardless of the season, which is why we often act as if nutritionally there is only one season.

That thinking can get us in trouble because our bodies naturally want heavier, insulating food during the winter which creates congestion in our bodies and creates the need to restore our constitutional balance.

It is very important that we understand the detoxification process because otherwise we may think we are detoxing when in fact our approach skims the surface.

My favorite book about detoxification is Dr. John Douillard’s Colorado Cleanse. He has a very accessible way of writing which makes it easy to understand detoxing and a very specific but flexible system to do so.

You may already understand some of the reasons why you need to detox but there are others that you probably do not. This book was an eye opener.

Here are some of the insights I gained from reading his book:

  1. detoxing is now a necessity because of the severe pollution in all areas of our environment with chemicals, plastics, carcinogens of various types, heavy metals and carbon emissions.
  2. pollutants build up in the body causing impaired functioning and damage to our immune systems, weakening us over time. They can lead to chronic as well as severe diseases and premature aging.
  3. toxins can damage the pathways of the body. This means that oxygen and nourishment are blocked from  reaching our cells and therefore, our cells can become undernourished. To be truly healthy, our entire system needs abundant oxygen and nourishment.
  4. during the winter months, we eat heavier foods because they are warming and insulating. Those foods can build us and interfere with our digestive systems. It is no different that accumulation in your house.  At some point it becomes disabling.
  5. the liver can become overwhelmed and when it does it does not process the toxins. It send the toxins back in to the system to be stored in fat cells.
  6. fat cells in the brain can store toxins just like fat elsewhere in the body.
  7. the digestive system can handle a variety of foods including those that are hard to digest. If digesting food is a problem then a detoxification and restoration process would be helpful.
  8. Research shows that 95% of the body’s serotonin production comes from the digestive system. This New York Times article discusses the second brain and serotonin.
  9. Toxins trapped in our cells can include mental and emotional toxins weighed down by a sluggish and overloaded body. Processing emotions is an important part of health and if affected by our health regimen.
  10. stress is processed in our digestive system. So if our digestive system is compromised we may develop stress related diseases and have reduced resilience to life’s challenges.

Taking care of your health involves regular detoxification and restoration of your  body especially the digestive system.  When you do your body and emotions should feel lighter and you will be a lot happier.

I highly recommend Dr. Douillard work as a great way to learn about your body’s needs for higher quality of life.

Triphala: Super Herb for Super Health

Fruits of Phyllanthus emblica L. © by lalithamba

If I was stranded on a deserted island, I would consider triphala one of the few essentials to have with me.

What is triphala? Triphala is one of the most important herbal preparations in existence.

I have been using it for over a decade. I have not had the conditions that it helps with.  It helps with premature graying of the hair because premature graying and balding occur in my family but fortunately not on my head.  I am happy to give triphala the credit.

It is such a well-rounded source of healing that I use it every day, and it helps me a lot. Triphala offers healing benefits to the entire human system. It is a special herb used extensively in the ancient healing system of Ayurveda which is over 5000 years old.

According to the Ayurveda Encyclopedia, triphala is an herbal mixture of three herbs, amalaki, bibhitaki and haritaki. The combination of the three herbs in triphala provides an herbal formula that works as a mild laxative that has the ability to rejuvenate the human system.

These are the specific conditions that each of the herbs can help heal:

Amalaki: it is used for:

  1. anemia
  2. arthritis
  3. asthma
  4. bronchitis
  5. colitis
  6. constipation
  7. diabetes
  8. duodenal and gastric ulcers
  9. eczema
  10. eye disorders
  11. chronic fever
  12. gout
  13. premature graying and balding
  14. heart attack prevention
  15. hepatitis
  16. hemorrhoids
  17. high blood pressure
  18. insomnia
  19. jaundice
  20. mental disorders
  21. menorraghia
  22. osteoporosis
  23. rebuilds blood
  24. bones, cells and tissues
  25. rheumatism
  26. liver and spleen weakness
  27. tuberculaosis
  28. urinary disorders and difficulties
  29. vertigo
  30. vomiting

Bibhitaki

  1. colds, coughs and bronchitis
  2. chronic diarrhea
  3. dysentery
  4. eye disorders
  5. headache
  6. hemorrhoids
  7. gastro-intestinal diseases
  8. digestive disorders leading to obesity
  9. laryngitis
  10. liver disorders
  11. mucus
  12. nausea
  13. stones including urinary tract stones
  14. vomiting
  15. sore throat and voice problems

Haritaki

  1. anemia
  2. cough
  3. hemorrhoids
  4. diarrhea
  5. gas
  6. fevers
  7. malabsorption of nutrients
  8. urinary diseases
  9. tumors
  10. blood purification
  11. spleen and liver disorders
  12. ulcerated gums
  13. muscular rheumatism
  14. heart
  15. skin conditions including itching
  16. edema
  17. nervous disorders

I consider triphala a natural balancer for the body.  It is gentle and inexpensive and a great preventative.

It is unrealistic to expect that we can prevent all imbalances in the body. Triphala is a great way to help yourself with the damage from stress, toxins in our food, water and air that we cannot control. It can help you feel more secure about your current and future health.

Triphala is one of my great finds in life. It would definitely get my vote on what to take with me on a deserted island.
